In 2017, WEL launched an innovative supplier diversity and inclusion program. As a women’s rights organization, WEL has been a leading advocate for implementing supply chain practices that empower women. To demonstrate our commitment, we opened up our procurement opportunities to women-owned businesses (WOBs) and established a 70 percent target for prequalified WOB in our vendor list.
To achieve this target, WEL implemented strategic support for WOBs through:
Training sessions on bidding-tendering skills with exposure to procurement and credit experts
A prequalification initiative with a 50% target for 2019
WEL conducted 15 trainings reaching over 300 women in business. Thus far, out of the women trained, 62 have been prequalified (this is a 50 percent increase from only 30 WOB in Januray 2017). Of these, 15 WOB have been awarded tenders to supply goods and services at WEL.
As a result, WEL successfully conducted 15 trainings reaching over 300 women in business. Since the program’s inception, 62 have been prequalified—a 50 percent increase from just 30 WOBs in January 2017). Of these prequalified businesses, 15 WOBs have secured tenders to supply goods and services at WEL.
