WEL has supported WE Effect and its 15+ partners in Eastern Africa to integrate gender specific and gender sensitive approaches into their housing and rural development programmes. WE Effect’s focuses on strengthening the capacity of smallholder farmers, particularly women, by helping them form and grow their own profitable organizations. Additionally, it supports housing cooperatives and advocates for women’s land rights. WEL provides gender-responsive policy analysis and capacity building for cooperatives within WE Effect’s network.
The project directly targets 20,428 participants, of whom 10,750 (53%) are women and 9,678 (47%) are men. They are drawn from 9 grassroots organizations spread across over 15 counties in Kenya. Beyond these direct beneficiaries, it is expected that the project has impacted approximately 102,140 individuals, mainly members of the households of the participants.
As part of its broader commitment to gender equality and economic empowerment, WEL has also supported over 600 women and young GBV survivors, linking them to financial and non-financial services. Training efforts have focused on financial literacy, group savings, and small business management, enabling survivors to rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence.
