WEL in Partnership with National Democratic Institute (NDI/USAID)

WEL has been implementing a leadership programme for women funded by National Democratic Institute (NDI), using NDI’s training manuals and best practices in international democratic development. These materials were adapted to fit Kenya’s context, ensuring that they effectively address the needs and experience levels of the participants.

With NDI’s support, WEL successfully modified and localized the training program to enhance women’s participation in decision-making. The adapted materials—including manuals and training modules—were transformed into accessible tools for women candidates, voters, activists, and political party members.

Through this training programme, WEL directly reached 5360 women in 13 counties and indirectly reached over 16, 000 community members in 2017. As a result, women leaders have successfully engaged male counterparts in advancing gender-responsive legislation and budgeting at the county level, strengthening advocacy for gender equality in governance.
