WEL in partnership with Brot Fur Die Welt (Bread for The World)
Women leaders are increasingly influencing decision-making at both the community and county levels. They are actively engaging in county government processes, including legislation, policy-making, and budgeting, while also gaining the confidence to participate in decisions affecting their households and communities. County governments are taking steps to develop, adopt, and implement laws, policies and budgeted strategies that support women’s participation in decision making processes—both in the public sphere and at the household level. Additionally, men and boys are becoming key agents of change and are actively supporting women’s leadership, economic empowerment, and advocating for action from government officials and duty bearers.
Through its partnership with Bread for the World, WEL has strengthened the capacity of women’s self help groups (SHGs), community members and county governments in Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa, Embu, Nairobi, Bungoma and Baringo to prevent and respond to domestic violence using the SASA methodology. Recognizing the link between poverty and gender-based violence (GBV), the programme also focuses on economic empowerment for GBV survivors, by engaging members of the SHGs in financial education. WEL has equipped over 600 women and young survivors of GBV with financial literacy and small business management skills, providing them with access to both financial and non-financial services. By empowering survivors with economic opportunities, the program strengthens their independence and long-term resilience.
