DCA – Strengthening Community-based structures to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence.
This project was implemented across five sub-counties in Nakuru: Nakuru East, Nakuru West, Gilgil, Bahati, and Njoro, with the aim of eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) by strengthening community structures. In terms of prevention, the project focused on empowering key community structures such as human rights defenders, male champions, and religious leaders, who play a critical role in raising awareness, challenging harmful social norms, and advocating for behavioral change. These groups are equipped to foster a culture of respect, gender equality, and safety, helping to prevent violence before it occurs. Additionally, the project integrated Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC), which provide women with economic empowerment and financial independence, reducing their vulnerability to violence. Through these groups, women have gained skills in financial management, boosting their confidence and ability to make decisions within their households and communities, further preventing VAWG.
On the response side, the project collaborated with rescue centers that provide immediate support to survivors of VAWG, offering services such as safe housing, counseling, and legal assistance. Community Action Groups (CAGs) also played a crucial role, providing counseling services and ensuring survivors are connected to appropriate legal, medical, and psychological support. By strengthening both rescue centers and CAGs, the project ensured a comprehensive and coordinated response system, offering survivors the care and support they need for recovery. Through these combined efforts, we were able to address VAWG holistically, from prevention to empowerment and responsive care for those affected.
